UIM’s education program focuses on after-school reading programs that provide individual and small-group tutoring. These programs help elementary and middle school students learn to read and read to learn. At the high school level programs focus on tutoring, college preparation, and career exploration.
In a state, a city, and a neighborhood that are known for a devastated educational system, UIM’s education program gives students hope and training. It provides an essential support system that helps students not only succeed but see that God has a plan and future for their lives.
Through our programs we have helped 16 Central City residents get accepted into and attend college. Five have graduated, including one who graduated with a BS in Dental Hygiene from LSU Dental School in 2001 as the first African-American to do so in five years. Mike Babst builds on 11 years of education experience as he directs our education program. |
