Education
Our Mission:
To glorify God by empowering at-risk youth of Central City New Orleans to discover and experience the plans that God has for them through an individualized, nationally-competitive, and Christ-centered education
This is accomplished through two initiatives:
Urban Impact Leadership Academy and our KIPP elementary and middle school partnership.
Urban Impact Leadership Academy (UILA):
Founded in July 2007 UILA started with 8 students and will add 10 students each year up to 40 students. Their school year starts in July and ends June 1st.
Each student at UILA works on a course of study diagnostically individualized to meet his or her specific learning needs and capabilities. Students must achieve a score of 80% or higher before advancing to the next level.
As a result, all of our students started the year needing to learn all of their math facts and how to do basic subtraction. Now all but two have mastered their math facts through division, and one student is starting Algebra I. Also, after only a semester of school, three students have already increased their reading comprehension by more than one full grade level. Our attendance is over 90 percent.

KIPP Central City Academy classroom support:
“KCCA is a college preparatory public middle school that builds the academic skills, personal values, and intellectual habits of mind to succeed in high school, college, and beyond” (taken from the KIPP website, www.kippcentralcity.org). We currently serve KCCA Monday-Friday for approximately 12 hours/week. Our daily role is to support teachers by teaching small groups of students in math remediation and phonics. We work to make connections with students we know, build relationships with those we don’t, and encourage all students towards academic excellence.
Tuesday Night Homework Center:
Our TNH Center has a two-fold purpose:
- Because KIPP students have a heavy academic load, they are not able to attend youth night and get Tuesday homework done. Our center offers KIPP students a meal, a quiet place to do homework, and qualified tutors to connect with them and help as needed. Through this, we are able to support their education and integrate them into the spiritual teaching that youth night offers.
- For youth attending other schools who may be struggling academically, we offer tutoring and a quiet atmosphere to work on homework. We also intentionally evaluate with them the quality of their education and work to get them in to good schools such as KIPP or UILA.
The numbers: we have around 20 students attend each week. We have 7-9 volunteers and 3 staff.
