Internships

We have three basic interships available: Summer, Work Crew, and D-team.  Below is more information on all three internships.  If you are interested please contact Sandy Lee at sandyl@urbanimpact.org or 504-523-5556.

“I’ve learned a lot about how to live with a ton of people, and that has stretched me to where I thought I might pop.  However, I’m getting married next year and starting my own family.  This year was good training for living in future houses full of people.”

“I’ve learned that ministry is not all about me.  Without realizing it, I had built up a lot of pride in myself from my “ministry experience.”  … God smashed all my paradigms in one fell swoop.”

“I learned about myself, more about my likes and dislikes, more about the world around me.  I learned how to wash fifteen passenger vans by myself, how to create a filing system, and how to keep my room clean.  (Mom, don’t have a heart attack.)”

“I learned how to be assertive and stand for what I think is right.  I learned how to look a soft-hearted six-year-old kid in the tear-stained face and tell him in love that he is suspended for fighting.  I learned how to get a twelve year old boy to stop fighting before he got himself killed.  I learned how to settle down a van full of rambunctious kids.  I learned how to rapidly make nine beds.  I learned to do everything in love and to rely on Christ for all my strength.”

Summer Internships

Length: 10 weeks
Raise: Up to $4,000 (if you raise less, you get paid less)
Pay: Room and board plus $3,200 for the summer.

Since Hurricane Katrina, or need for interns has increased. Our summer interns stay about 10 weeks during the summer and have the primary responsibility for hosting our summer mission teams – called the National Project.  Each summer, hundreds of high school students and leaders come through our program, and our summer interns work to host the groups, lead Challenge Circle recreational outreaches, direct our VBS programs, and facilitate training.  We like to have 8-10 interns each summer – with a mix of students from inside and outside our neighborhood.

Interns are able to earn decent money for their work over the summer, and we can even work with your school to meet one of your intern/practicum requirements.  Preference is given to students who are one year out of high school.

Work Crew

Length: 2 weeks
Raise: $500 (if you raise less, you get paid less)
Pay: Room and board, plus up to $300 for the two weeks.

For students who are too busy or inexperienced for the summer internship, we offer the Work Crew.  This two-week internship allows students to help us with mission teams, get fourteen days in New Orleans, and test the waters for a longer internship in the future.  Preference here goes to students who have just graduated from high school.

Our Work Crew takes special pride in doing all the real work around here.  They prepare and serve meals, clean facilities, take care of equipment – and get a chance to do some relational ministry alongside the mission teams.  We offer pay of $300 for the two weeks – along with a lifetime of great memories!

D-Team

Length:  9 months
Raise:  $900/month
Pay:  Room and board, ministry expenses, small monthly stipend

Our Discipleship Team internship is made up of 18-25 year old students who give nine months of their lives (about August 20—May 20) to follow Jesus in New Orleans.  Their purpose is to assist and refresh the ministry of Urban Impact while preparing interns for a lifetime of ministry.  D-Team students raise money to cover housing, food, ministry expenses, and a small monthly stipend.

After “boot camp” training, our D-Teamers settle into one or two primary areas of ministry – working with middle school, education, youth ventures, or another one of our ministries.  In the mornings, interns participate in staff meetings and go through training that covers Bible/theology, urban ministry, discipleship, devotional life, and spiritual autobiography.  Some of our more ambitious interns have even taken a couple college classes at a local community college.
