How long have you worked at UIM and what were you doing before that?

I have been at UIM for 8 years. I am humbled that God selected me to work at UIM and it’s an awesome journey unlike any I have ever experience before! I feel exceptionally blessed to be here and I am constantly reminded of Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

I started working at UIM after Hurricane Katarina. Before UIM, I worked at the Personnel Consultant Group, a professional staffing agency that supported and still, to this day, supports UIM.

Your title is Office Manager and Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director. What is your favorite part of your job?

My heart is always filled with joy by fellowshipping, loving and caring for people. Intentionally being available to pray with people and listen to what they have to say, be it a problem or praise. Not everybody wants a solution to his or her problem. They just need a good listener. As one of my supporters would put it, “I’m thanking God that I get to love on folks and love them into the Kingdom of God”.

How has working at 2323 S. Galvez been better than at the Yellow House?

Space, space, and more space to grow the ministry and His Kingdom.

Tell us a little about your family.

I was born, baptized, and born again into a Christian family. My father was the Head Deacon and Treasurer of our church. My mother sang in the choir. I had seven siblings – four sisters (one deceased now) and two brothers – all of whom served in the church in some capacity. I may be the middle child but only believe the positive things “they” say about middle children because it’s true! I was married for a total of twelve years. From that union, God blessed me with three children whom I love more than life. I have one daughter, Tyeshia who is 28 years old and two sons, Eddie, 26 years old, and Trey 17 years old. Trey is a senior in high school and on June 3, 2015 he graduates and all will leave the nest. I constantly pray for my children, for wisdom and God’s provision as a single mom!

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to play tennis, garden, and listen to classical instrumental music (mainly piano).

How have you seen Christ use you in this job?

I have been stretched out of my comfort zone and I dare not get back into that box. Once God calls you out, you have to be obedient. God has giving me the ability to serve so many people locally (Central City, New Orleans), missionaries nationally (all the various states), and missionaries abroad (Switzerland, Canada and Brazil). God has given me a voice to speak for the people unable to advocate for themselves, for example, people needing help or coming into the office needing their utilities paid. I’m blessed to have stepped up to assist with our NOLATransform program in the fall and NOLAFusion summer program. I am blessed to talk to parents bringing their children to Day Camp, as well as counsel kids during while they’re here. I am humbled by being able to lead the Ushers Ministry and to facilitate the Single Mom’s Bible Study. None of this is in my strength but through the Holy Spirit and His guidance.

What would you like to see UIM improve on in the coming years?

What would you like to see UIM get even better at in the coming years?
I’m looking forward to seeing what God has planned for this ministry for years to come. I feel blessed that I have been able to witness the growth these past eight years and of course we strive to be more like Christ.
